Founded in December 2023 by a coalition of victim-survivors and allies, The Moxie Collective (TMC) stands as a bastion against the growing prevalence of Image-based Sexual Assault (IBSA) in Singapore. Our hope is for this growing community to develop into a refuge for Singaporean girls and women who have experienced IBSA. We are committed to eradicating the isolation that victim-survivors face, challenging the surge of tech-enabled sexual violence, and offering resources for those seeking solace and justice.
On 14 January 2024, in a quaint cafe located in the Botanic Gardens, the team gathered for our first meeting of the year. Over the aroma of coffee, we introduced ourselves, shared our motives for being a part of TMC, and disclosed our perceived strengths and weaknesses which served as a promising beginning for mutual understanding, empathy, and support.
The meeting took a reflexive turn as members engaged in visioning exercises, guided by lessons learned in 2023. With a pen in hand, we journaled personal and collective aspirations for the new year. Our goals were diverse and far-reaching; we pledged to discard debilitating mindsets, cultivate authentic connections, master new crafts, remain dedicated to our passion projects, and venture abroad. A collective vision board was subsequently pieced together, capturing each member’s resolutions for the year. Crafted from a variety of scrapbook materials, the vision board constitutes a tangible symbol of our commitment toward our ambitions and marks TMC’s inaugural year.
In preparation for our upcoming reading group discussion, we also selected an appropriate book for collective learning. Cognisant of the weight of trauma and the power of victim-blaming discourses, 'Know My Name' by Chanel Miller was selected. This important memoir paves the way for an intimate understanding of the everyday realities of being a victim-survivor of sexual assault. We look forward to initiating meaningful conversations on pain, justice, and healing through discussion of our selected text.
Our journey ahead is adorned with challenges, growth, and unity. TMC is a testament to the strength that emerges when women, who refuse to be discounted, come together and take action. In the spirit of camaraderie, we invite you to be a part of this journey. Together, let’s challenge narratives, uplift one another, and stand against the pernicious effects of IBSA.
